Whats a good way to get rid of powdery mildew on roses?

And does anyone know of any homemade solutions?

Whats a good way to get rid of powdery mildew on roses?
Mix 1 Teaspoon of dish soap in a quart spray bottle and spray them in the early morning. Or you can just remove each leaf and new leaves will grow. But the soapy water works good.
Reply:Spray them with a sulfur spray found at any garden center. Also applying high nitrogen fertilizer will help them regrow lost leaves although mildew will spread to new growth if untreated.
Reply:Also only water in the mornings so the plants can dry off. Prune out the centers of the plants to allow air flow in. If all else fails shovel prune them and get some David Austin and Old Garden roses. They dont get the problems the modern roses do.

Ants on my roses! How do I get rid of them?

This spring for some strange reason Im seeing lots of ants inside my roses. They seem to be eating away at the closed buds too and later when flowers open they have all these holes! Whats attracting these ants to the roses and is there a safe and preferably organic solution to this problem?thanks in advance.

Ants on my roses! How do I get rid of them?
Ants don't usually go to a plant unless there is something else that is attracting them to it. You may want to give a good check for aphids. When they attact the plant they secrete a kind of sugar which then attracts the ants. If it is aphids, there are a variety of pesticides that can be purchased to correct the problem. Check with your local Garden Center for appropriate solutions to the problem.
Reply:spray them with dawn and beer mixed and especially the ground around it
Reply:If you have ants on your roses, it's a secondary problem. Ants cultivate the sugary substance that aphids secrete. It's not the ants that are eating your roses. Ants don't eat plants. If you have holes you might have any number of critters; aphids, earwhigs, sawfly larvae. If you want to be organic, then spray your roses with water every day. If not, spray any number of insecticides safe for roses. There are also "Safer" products that are not that harmful to humans, pets, that will kill insects.

Good luck.

Is it too late to plant roses (container planting in Florida)?

So I was thinking about trying my hand at gardening and wanted to try to grow my own roses (I was think about hybrid teas). But is it too late? I am in Central Fl and would try container growing (since I don't have a lot of space). Thanks for your help!

Is it too late to plant roses (container planting in Florida)?
I'd say probably in central Florida, it'd be possible to try growing roses all year round.

I would visit a local nursery and ask them. They'll be more expert at the local climate and recommending varieties that do well in your area and for what you want it to do: Live in a pot.

How do I get rid of beetles inside my roses, mainly in the pink roses?

What is the best solution to get rid of aphids on my rose bushes

How do I get rid of beetles inside my roses, mainly in the pink roses?
The best and safest way to get rid of the beetles is to pick them off and kill them. Some roses are so delicate that anything will hurt them. For the aphids try 1 teaspoon ivory dish liquid with 1 gallon water and spray, tis will clog their pores and suffocate them. Be sure to check for babies in about 5-7 days.
Reply:I will try it. Thank you very much. Report It
Reply:COFFEE GROUNDS, BELIVE ME IT WORKS, JUST PUT USED COFFEE GROUNDS IN THE SOIL AROUND THE PLANTS AND THE APHIDS WILL GO...

Little green insects with black spots are eating my roses. Will Demon WP insecticide control them without harming the rose bush.

Can you use Demon WP on Roses to control insects?
Check the label, if approved for roses it will say so. Or you could try making up a solution of dish soap and spray on the insects. This works good for aphids and may work for you. Is cheap and easy so may be worth a try.

How do I keep my roses alive!?

I'm planning on getting some roses tonight, to give to my girlfriend tomorrow morning. I was just wondering - What's the best way to make sure they don't begin wilting, before that time? Thank you!

How do I keep my roses alive!?
cut about one inch off the stem so that they get a new cut and keep them in water.
Reply:Okay, there is lots of things to do.. you can put a penny in the water w/ sugar for the plants food, and I've heard sprite helps it stay purky..
Reply:I got roses today as well. They said keep them in the fridge so they are cold and fresh tomarrow.
Reply:most roses have a package of stuff that comes with them now a-days that keeps them living for a good while

or just put them in the fridge
Reply:No worries! If the florist is still open go back and ask for those little tube things so each flower can have it's own water supply. If not, just put them in the fridge. Keeping them cool will slow the wilting stage.
Reply:Stick them in the fridge. Also, packing ice into the vase helps, too.

How many roses are enough for a decent size bouquet?

I'm thinking about getting my bf a bouquet of roses for Valentine's Day. I've given him bouquets a few times for regular days, but I want this one to be special. How many roses do I need to get for a fairly large size bouquet? I was thinking of 30 to 50. Is that too much or too little?

How many roses are enough for a decent size bouquet?
30 maybe be alright...but 50 seems to much...

they're gonna be real heavy

so, i'd say 30
Reply:I think that is way too much. Go with six roses mixed with baby's breath and other flowers. Keep it simple and sweet. The abundance is not going to impress... the simplicity is.
Reply:24 should be good. I think anything over that is way too much. Especially for a guy.
Reply:One dozen red roses make a very nice bouquet. Course if money is no problem, go for whatever you want to spend. Where I live 50 roses would be well over $100.
Reply:as many as you can kill why buy a rose bush cause then you would have to enjoy them all the time
Reply:6 - 8 - 12 - 24 - 32.
Reply:He's a guy...they are not real flower people. But they love the thoughtfullness. If he drives a car, put a rose on his windshield and fill his car to the top with balloons. Put a card on the seat. If you must do a big bouquet, do a dozen roses and some stargazers...now thats drama!

How long would it take to dye white roses blue through sticking the roses in blue food coloring?

You should see some color within a hour or two, but usually overnight and sometimes into the next day. You may have to recut the bottoms every 12 hours to encourage uptake, also try to keep the stems in the water when you cut them so air bubbles don't get into the stem. Keep the foliage on the stems as they will help pull the water up. If the rose is old, fully opened, no, there won't be much uptake.

How long would it take to dye white roses blue through sticking the roses in blue food coloring?
Umm...Why don't you just get a genictically altered rosebush instead. Burpees has one called Blue Ribbon that gets it's blue from Bluebells or Iris.
Reply:You cut the stem %26amp; put them directly in blue tinted water.
Reply:Overnight. They won't turn completely blue.

Making roses for cake decorating?

Has anyone used the silicone moulds to make roses with fondant. I would love to know the address of the roses that retail in the cake store that come from the Phillipines!

Making roses for cake decorating?
your best resource if you dont know where to find the silicone mold needed is search it in ebay; i bought mine there it was product of Argentina.

although yes there are more details in using the molds, u still can make fondant roses without the mold its pretty easy

divide the fondant into small-medium size balls, flat each with a spoon; when you get as much as petals you need it, roll another small-tiny fondant for middle part of the rose and "glue" the petals to it resembling a rose.

if you go to youtube.com there are quite a few videos on how to make fondant roses without the molds, which is easy and cheaper

:)

I bought cut roses and after the flower head tipped there is new growth off of the stem How do I replant this?

The new growth is leafy matter coming from the stem in several spots. I have changed the water in the vase, but done nothing else to promote the growth. Everyday when I come home from work it is about a quarter of an inch longer than when I left in the morning. I would like to be able to plan this and ideally get a new rose bush.

Go buy some "root harmone" from walmart or any garden center...cut the stem below a node on the stem at an angle....wet it dip the stem in root hormone..shake ecxess off and plant in potting soil..within 2 weeks it will start roots in the soil..cost about 3.00

Is it bad to be sucking ob flowers and roses?

like u know on the stem and stuff because i got the habit of doing that and i cant stop.

Is it bad to be sucking ob flowers and roses?
Why don't you plant some honeysuckle? Then you can pluck the flowers and suck them till your heart's content.

As for the flowers and roses, I'd check and see if they are edible or not. If they're not poisonous, then go ahead and suck on them if you like them. HOWEVER, I wouldn't suck on commercially grown flowers or roses, they will have chemicals ALL OVER them, including pesticides. What's poisonous to an ant, is probably poisonous to you. I'd stick with things that you KNOW where they were grown, and if they've been sprayed with anything.

Can you move roses with out putting them in shock?

Moving in Fall the whole plant to a new bed.

Can you move roses with out putting them in shock?
Roses are not horrible to transplant. A few of weeks before your predicted first killing frost, prune your plants as appropriate for their variety, dig a big root ball and move to the prepared new spot. Make sure the new site is well drained, gets enough daylight and that the soil is loose and enriched (if necessary) with compost or well rotted manure. When the plants are in place, give them a shot of root stimulator to get their roots spreading before the frosts start. Mulch well, use rose caps, if needed, depending on the variety and your growing zone. Voila! moved roses.
Reply:my husband is no gardener, but he surprised me one day by transplanting a rose bush from the empty house next door to our backyard. he just made sure that he dug up plenty of the dirt around the rose, added a little sand to the new hole, clipped the branches and watered it well afterwards. we havent fertilized it or anything, and it has grown so big in the past year that im going to start clipping it and giving away the clippings as gifts.
Reply:I moved some in a dedicated bed. The spot was becoming a memorial garden. They wanted them moved, but not killed. I waited until they were dormant and watered them every day for about a month. Lo and behold they came back!!! Be very careful with the roots.

I want to start a rose garden. How do I begin and with what kind of roses?

1. You begin by testing the soil where they will be and then add the necessary amenities. The soil preparation is very critical.

2. The roses you choose should be the ones that are best in your climate. Once you find the roses that grow best in your climate, choose from those. Personally, I like ones with a lot of fragrance and that climb along my fence.

3.Once they are established they are fairly hardy and take light regualar maintenance.

I want to start a rose garden. How do I begin and with what kind of roses?
I strongly suggest Jackson and Perkins roses. They are the best, and have a system of trade if the roses do badly.

Check out the area you live in for the biggest problem for roses and be prepared. Japanese beetles can destroy a rose bush in under a day if not controled. Black Spot will kill a rose in a season.

These are easy to deal with, if you start off on the right foot. Roses are NOT hard to grow! Keep them trimmed back though. Nothing is more sad that a spiny, thin rose bush that isn't cared for.

Best of luck!
Reply:Roses come in all shapes, sizes, colors and ease of care. There are roses that require weekly spraying with fungicides to look their best, and, just as importantly, there are roses that can flourish with little or no care. In a way, roses are like cars when it comes to the amount of trouble they are. There are cars that are very expensive, very fast and very temperamental. Not everyone can own a Porsche or a Ferrari. Not everyone wants to own such cars. It takes an inclination to tinker, a knowledgeable mechanic and lots of money to fall in love with some models of cars. And lots of time.

But it is also possible to latch onto a reliable car that, with minimal care, will last 100,000 miles. And so it is with roses.

The purpose of this article is to talk to you about some easy to grow roses that anyone putting in their first garden can successfully grow--and be proud of. Roses that take minimal care to produce maximum results. Roses for people who have never grown roses before. And roses that will cause your neighbors to come over to see how you are doing it.

Texas A%26amp;M has a continuing research project to find these roses. The roses that make the cut get their "EarthKind" designation. The process they go through to find these roses is interesting. First, they asked rose growers for the names of easy to care for roses. They then planted several examples of the roses in test gardens around the state. They did not water the roses. They did not fertilize the roses. They did not prune the roses. They did not even spray the roses--for insects or for fungus. And, believe it or not, some roses did fine under this intentional neglect. These are the roses that earned the EarthKind designation. Now, I am not recommending you just plant these roses and walk away. But these are roses that will survive if you do that. And they will flourish if you give them just minimal care.

What do I mean by minimal care? Plant them where they get a minimum of six hours of sun. Eight is better. Full sun is best. Give them an inch of water a week. Plant them in raised beds. Add three or four inches of mulch to the top of the rosebed. Try to fertilize them a couple of times a year with organic fertilizer. Sit back and relax (and read the rest of my webpages on rose growing).

Below is an alphabetical list of the EarthKind roses, with my comments.
Reply:go to a local garden store, they can help you a lot more than anybody here can as they would be near where you live and want to start the garden and can tell you what kinds of roses grow best in the climate where you live.
Reply:as a master gardener, your best bet just starting out go with "double Delights" they are tri colored and beautiful. Buy from a gardening cataolog most purchases that way are gaurenteed. Dont buy from chain stores or grocery no telling how long thevye been there and how dried out they can be. Follow the instructions on planting and care when you recieve them

I've done some research and according to what I've found, black roses do exist, but their not truly black. The closest rose that is black is called Tuscany. I can imagine you can go to any store that sells plant seeds and ask them if they have any available for purchase.

On my roses, should I deadhead when they die or leave them alone?

They've bloomed 3 times so far this year, but with the heat and little rain, they look a little scraggly, so I haven't been harvesting them.

On my roses, should I deadhead when they die or leave them alone?
Deadheading encourages more bloom and makes the plant look better. No matter that the pros say about pruning, I keep the dead, brown looking stuff cut off as soon as I see it. Water Roses in the early morning. Watering in the evening encourages mildew.
Reply:deadheading roses encourages new blossoms. The swollen bulblike heads that develop after flowering are called "rosehips" and can be used to make rosehip tea, they are the seedpods for the plant. Remember that winter is the time to prune roses so that may explain the scraggly look.

most repeat blooming roses dont produce hips so deadheading is probably best

How to grow roses, cattleya and PHALAENOPSIS?.?

I'm from the Philippines and I'm having a hard time growing them. They always die. The roses die with white insects on the branches. My Cattleyas dont bloom and they have yellow green leaves. My PHALAENOPSIS never blooms and eventually dies..pls. help me. thanks

How to grow roses, cattleya and PHALAENOPSIS?.?
The White insects you can get rid of by spraying them with a mild solution of dish soap and water. Just get a 32oz spray bottle, add one teaspoon of dish soap, one teaspoon of light cooking oil, and fill with water. Spray very early in the morning to avoid sunburn on the rose leaves. This will kill the Aphids.

Here is a site on how to bloom you Cattleyas orchid:

http://www.jporchids.com/jp_orchids_how_...

Phalalenopsis: I'm not sure what could be going on with your Phal. I grow Phalaenopsis and haven't had any trouble. One thing you can try is once you phal has lost its bloom then repot it in an orchid bark mix, place it in indirect light, and water in when the bark is completely dry. This would completely depend on humidity. I usually have to water once a week. Also, don't use tap water. Use rain or distilled water to water your orchids.

Girlfriends coming, and this seems to be pretty rare. Searching hasn't helped.

Where can I buy cut Black Baccara roses online for overnight/next-day delivery?
I found two sources, one in the UK and one in the US. The US source is bulk, so the least you can buy is 75 stems, but they are less expensive than a dozen from the UK source.

If you are in the US, and want them in a vase...call a local florist and offer to share them in exchange for arranging them for you.

Both ship overnight.

Good Luck!!

When and how should i prune my roses this year?

i have rose bushes in the front garden which are looking a bit worse for wear, when and how should i prune them?

When and how should i prune my roses this year?
You should have pruned them already this year really.

The Top rose societies now believe that you should remove only one third of a bush rose in the early spring and this can even be done with a hedge trimmer. Studies have shown that the traditional pruning method of pruning to an outward facing bud with secateurs is no more effective than shaping with a hedge trimmer.

The most important thing is to keep the rose healthy.

Mulch around the base with some well rotted manure or compost (this can be bought bagged) and give it a spring feed with a rose fertiliser or Growmore. If the soil around the plant is compacted, then give it a very light fork over and water before mulching around the plant. Mulching will help keep the soil moist and help to keep your rose less stressed... wouldn't be nice if mulching us did the same!

In the autumn feed again with growmore and make sure you rake up any dead leaves as these will harbour pests and diseases over winter. Keep mulching your roses and have a read of a good rose book from your local library if you're keen.

Hope that helps a bit and I hope your roses perk up and flower appreciatively this year for you.
Reply:I have a fairly large rose bush in a center peace out front. I can say by experiance, prune in the fall after the leaves and stalks turn dark. The stalks that appear dead, prune all the way down next to the ground. But the ones that still have green in them, only prune down to what shape you desire. Tea roses need to be pruned down to about 6-10 inches above the ground.

During the season, trim off the dried buds after the bloom has finished,to help promote more blooms.

Hope this is of help to you.

Some of the leaves on my miniature roses are turning a dark red color. Should I be concerned or is this normal

I'm in zone 7b and we have had a freak frost for the past couple nights. I didn't know if this had anything to do with them doing this. They are still producing flowers, so I can just assume that they are fine, but I want to make sure.

Some of the leaves on my miniature roses are turning a dark red color. Should I be concerned or is this normal
dark red should be on the newer growth to be normal... unless the color of the rose is a deep dark red... then a red leaf is okay, too....

How far back do I prune mature roses for the winter?

These are growing to a height of 8 feet and I would perfer them shorter.

How far back do I prune mature roses for the winter?
I'd rather cut them back in the spring, after bud-break. Allow winter to take it's course, it may kill back some of the plant, you never know.

It is important to know what kind of rose you have. If it's a modern rose (and not a climber), you can pretty much have your way with it, reducing it in size as you see fit. If it is an antique rose, same sort of rules apply, but be aware, it might grow back just as strong as you've cut it back. Some roses (most notably climbers and ramblers, especially older varieties) bloom from older wood. A cutting back may reduce the quantity of flowers.

If you decide to reduce the size of your rose, I would probably remove a few of the oldest canes to the ground (or about there), and let new ones develop in their place. Generally roses bloom best off of young wood (except climbers as above). Every year do this, until most of the oldest wood is gone.

If you do it that way, and discover, darn! it bloomed better with that older wood, you can stop before you've destroyed your rose.

I hope that this helps

Good luck-

Reply:Borax

The use of borax for preserving flowers has an advantage in that the flowers hold their shape and shrinkage is minimal. Generally the color of the flowers is assured except pinks and reds may vary. Time is of the essence, however. If the flowers remain in borax too long, they become brittle and lose their petals.

Generally, a mixture of half borax and half corn meal (white or yellow), sand or oat meal is recommended. The mixtures may be sifted and the borax used over and over. Some experts use a 1 to 5 and still others a 1 to 10 mixture. Experimenting will be necessary to suit individual techniques and preferences. Apply the same method as when sand is used. Lift the flowers from the borax mixture by gently running the hand under the flowers.

The individual must decide whether the flowers should be dried face-up, face-down, or horizontally. The form or shape of the flowers will determine the best method.

Sand Drying

Fine white sand, such as that found on the seashore, is the best. Use a cardboard box with holes in the bottom. Cover the bottom with newspaper and place one-half inch of sand in the box. Place the flowers face-down, stems and foliage in the box

and cover with additional sand. 7 to 10 days will be required. Then punch holes in the bottom of the box and let the sand drain. Do not pull the flowers from the sand as the petals and foliage may be destroyed.

Sand from the river and beach should be washed and baked in the oven until dry. This should be done twice. Fine builders sand is cheap and may be used without additional preparation.

Other Methods

There are many other materials that may be used for drying flowers such as using detergents. They may be used alone or mixed with corn meal at the rate of 1 part detergent and 2 parts corn meal. Kitty litter is also very absorbent and light in weight and may be used by applying the same techniques used for sand or borax methods of drying.

two to three years with proper care and fertilization. But of you're lucky, you might get a little bit of bloom this year.
Reply:By now you should be getting lots of new growth and buds forming. If not, you may not have planted it correctly.

Roses need lots of sun, at least 6 hours a day. If its not getting that much, consider digging it up and moving it.

They also need lots of food, fertilze once a week with miracle grow or something like it.

If you're not seeing any new growth, it could be many things. Take it back and get a refund.
Reply:I bought something similar, but mine didn't have leaves on it yet. It was basically a stick with roots. I planted it about a month ago and it already has a small rose and lots of buds and leaves.
Reply:it will bloom this summer. roses grow really fast. keep an eye out for insects and spray when necessary. roses are easy to grow but they need special care. a few hours every week feeding, checking for insects and occasional pruning will give you flowers on and off all summer!
Reply:It should take about a month for them to bloom, depending on the sunlight, water, and time of year planted. Best to plant in springtime.
Reply:about 10 mins

Do you know where I can purchase a tool for stripping thorns off roses?

I understand that these tools can be purchased at wholesale florist supplies but I don't know of any. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Do you know where I can purchase a tool for stripping thorns off roses?
Alex is right, you can use a pair of common household shears. If you have a bunch to strip, though and aren't comfortable with using them, I left a link to afloral's page below. I have ordered many supplies in the past, and have always been satisfied with their products and service. I linked you directly to the stripper page *giggle*...I said "stripper".....

Can u perserv the color of roses useing hairspray?

i read somewhere that if u spray a rose with hairspray that it will better hold the color and shape. is theis true? do u need a certan kind or brand? i need them to mostly hold the color.

Can u perserv the color of roses useing hairspray?
NO! Hair spray kills the plants because of the toxic chemicals located in them. Also, aerosol hair spray is one of the leading causes of global warming, so I recommend you don't even contribute to buying such products.
Reply:Enough of the global warming already, give me a break! CFC's haven't been in aerosols for over a decade.

You can buy a can of Spray polyurethane at a hardware store or anywhere they sell paints. Coat the flowers with many very light coats, letting it dry between coats [about 5 minutes if the coats are thin.]

Is it possible to get my roses to come back?

I moved into this house last august and was told that the 5 rose bushes have gone wild and will never flower. I live in zone 5. Is there something I can do (fertilize, prune, ect.) to get them back?

Is it possible to get my roses to come back?
If this was a grafted rose and the rose died back to the ground over winter or the graft failed, you could be seeing growth from the root stock, generally a much hardier, vigorous but otherwise not garden worthy rose.

"Grafted roses, commonly referred to as budded plants, are plants where the desired rose is grafted or budded onto a rootstock of a different type. The point where the desired variety and the rootstock meet is called the bud union.

Own-root roses may be recommended for those in very cold climates. This is because an own-root rose that dies back to the ground during the winter can grow back the next year from the roots. If a grafted rose dies back to the ground, what will come up next Spring is the rootstock variety, usually an undesireable variety of rose."

When a rose "goes wild" that is dies back below the graft, the wild growth looks every bit like a rose....thorns and all, but usually blooms with small white flowers.

If you live in zones 5 and north you need to remember to plant a grafted rose with the graft 4 inches below the ground level.
Reply:Honey, roses are more hearty than you think. You do have to fertilize it (a bit of rose fertilizer--buy it in the garden center) in spring and every month or two, but if it's getting huge and isn't flowering it's because you haven't pruned it. Some roses are continuous bloom and some are just a once-of-year. Go check out a book from your library on roses, and determine the type. While you're at the garden center grab a pair of pruners and have at it. Cut back to the first group of 5 leaves you see (the closest to the tip, not to the base) and you're gonig to be getting them in the droves. All roses are wild by nature, it's humans who tame them. Water it every other day. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

Reply:All roses bloom, even wild ones. Go ahead and prune them back. If the growth is coming from above the graft they have not gone wild. if the growth is below the graft they have and the grafted part has died. Wild roses usually have more flowers but they usually only have 5 petals as opposed to the hybrid tea or floribunda types. But they are just as attractive IMHO. Feed them with a balanced fettilizer. You may be surprised at the results.
Reply:try all of things you mentioned and see what happens...

good luck...
Reply:Absolutely. Prune very hard, preferably in the spring. Dig in some bonemeal around the roots.

And if you deadhead after the blooms have faded you will get more flushes.
Reply:use Bayer systemic rose food or any brand that is "systemic " It will feed the plants but also protect them from diseases and bugs....there is a great link and you can search for whatever help you need with your roses

Is it possible to make cut roses "perk up" once they start sagging?

If you don't manage to perk them up, try cutting the stems very short and floating them in a bowl. It is surprising how long they last like this.

Is it possible to make cut roses "perk up" once they start sagging?
Yes. The stem ends are clogged with air bubbles and/or bacteria. Cut off the stems underwater, with a super-sharp knife, if possible. Cut off about 1 1/2 " at least from each stem, being sure the cut on the stem stays immersed for at least 30 seconds before quickly transferring it to a vase of fresh water. Put an aspirin or two in the water, and a couple of ounces of Sprite or 7-Up. If this does not work it is too late. But the aspirin really can save some pretty sad-looking cut flowers.
Reply:Not sure how to reverse the drooping, but I can give you a tip on preventing the droop. Cut the stems underwater.
Reply:re-cut the stems at a slant under water and place them in warm water.
Reply:Give them booze. Seriously.

The secret to keeping cut flowers looking good as long as possible is to minimize the growth of bacteria in the water and to provide nourishment to replace what the flower would have gotten had it not been cut. Add a few drops of vodka (or any clear spirit) to the vase water for antibacterial action along with 1 teaspoon sugar. Change the water every other day, refreshing the vodka and sugar each time.
Reply:Pop an aspirin in the vase. Crush it first. This helps to make them last longer. Also trim about 1/2 inch from the bottom at an angle to help it absorb the water better.

I got this pot of little roses for valentines day, how do I take care of them properly?

They are blooming and everything, but someone mentioned clipping the buds so they grow more or something?

I got this pot of little roses for valentines day, how do I take care of them properly?
They need lots of sunshine and will do best if planted outdoors.

Look here for ideas: http://www.backyardgarden.info/tinyroses...
Reply:When the bloom go past trim them off so they don't try to make seed.

Let it have good sun - but not right tight to cold glass of window

Soil should be ;moist but not wet.
Reply:pour bleach on them. it helps.
Reply:Don't clip the buds, it won't help, when one of the flowers are dying, cut that bloom off, and hopefully another will grow!
Reply:Keep them in a sunny window and water them when they get dry. You really don't have to cut those small ones back unless they start to get too big (and the pot they're in is probably too small for that). You can pot them in a bigger container and add other flowers when the weather where you live gets nice, and put them outside. They will bloom beautifully!

Anybody have any tips for growing roses?

I have been to the AARS page and a few others...I was just wondering if anybody has tried anything different and it worked. Thanks!

Anybody have any tips for growing roses?
most cities and towns have a local rose society club or a garden club that welcome questions such as yours. Telephone the local Agriculture Extension service to locate the proper source. Also the extension service controls the area master gardeners and they are a wealth of information for the beginning gardener.

Each geographical area requires different techniques.
Reply:That last guy must have been talking about adding blood meal. It is a product you can buy at the garden or hardware store to add to roses or flowering plants. Report It
Reply:This may sound morbid, but.......

I had a chemistry teacher tell my that human blood was a great fertilizer for roses. She claimed she got old unusable blood from a blodd bank and spread it all over the soil. Whether that is true or not, I dunno; but if you are able to procure blood (without killing anyone), you may want to give it a shot.
Reply:Different; like what? We do not know how you are keeping yours now.

I use Ortho Rose and Flower systemic food. It keeps the roses disease-free and vibrant; also protects against black spot, rust and moulds.

This is not very different, though.
Reply:there are two basic rules for roses - lots of sun, and lots of food.

they need a very sunny place to grow and flower well. 8+ hours of direct sunlight a day is great. water as needed to keep the ground moist, daily if necessary.

lots of food. I give my roses miracle grow once a week.
Reply:Lots of sunlight, water daily, and good potting soil. Add minerals that you can buy at any gardening store. Keep the leaves trimmed also.
Reply:Human hair trimmings are great for feeding roses. My mother in law cuts everyone's hair and keeps the trimmings for her roses which are beautiful.

What can i do to save my miniature roses???

my husband bought me small minature roses in a small pot and they are dying rapidly. i have had them about 2 weeks and they are wilting. i water them once a week and have them near sunlight, but nothing seems to help. what can i do to save them ? what am i doing wrong ?

What can i do to save my miniature roses???
I think the most likely problem is a drastic change of temperature. Were they outdoor roses which have been brought in, perhaps? Or are they too close to the radiator? Or if they are indoor grown, are the too close to a window pane which allows them to freeze?

Also, check the conditions before you water them? How heavyis the pot? Overwatering kills as much as underwatering.
Reply:for mini roses, you need

1. tempeature/ lights

2. humidity ( since the air is dry in heated home), you need to spary water on them and water them often

3. a weekly shower to keep out spider mites

4. fertilizer

5. Pruning

and if you can keep them alive through the winter, they wil do better when the warm weather comes.

I am trying to locate some roses by the year that they were relelased, can anyone tell me where to start?

I have at least 4 years that I am looking for, but if there is a book to use or a list on line that would be very helpful.

Try the American Rose Society, or contact a local rose master from the site. Without knowing the names of the roses it's hard to know what to look for, even the hybridizer would be a good start.

Roses: what is the best way to get the most blooms?

In the Florida landscapes. I have a climbing red rose, beautiful when it blooms, however I am wondering if I could do something besides feed it to make it bloom more often.

Roses: what is the best way to get the most blooms?
Keep them trimmed up,if they are climbimg bushes, then don't "cut back"..as for diseases, you don't need to spend lots of money...

1 1/2 tbsp. of baking soda

1 tbsp. dishwashing liquid (Dawn works great)

1 tbsp. canola oil

1 C plus 1 Gal of water

1 tbsp. vinegar

Instructions:

Mix the baking soda, dishwashing liquid and oil with 1 cup of water. Than add the vinegar last because the mixture may bubble over. Pour the mix into a pump sprayer, and add the remaining water. Thoroughly spray your roses, covering the tops and bottoms of leaves to the point of run - off.
Reply:Good stufffff Report It
Reply:cut roses back fromm where they last bloomed feed them banana peelings into their soil
Reply:Be sure to remove the blossoms when they begin to fade - this encourages new buds to form.
Reply:If they are blooming well but don't bloom often, this is easy.

After the flower has died, trim it back to (or below) the next set of leaves that have 5 leaflets. Not 3, but 5!

If you just trim off where it flowered, it will grow leaf shoots, not flower buds. Trimming back to 5 will force it to shoot up flower buds.

That should be it, good luck.
Reply:epsom salt is a great fertilizer. (great for other things too)
Reply:miracle grow.....and use it on a regular basis. also make sure you don't have any of that black mold growing on there and do what you can to keep it bug free. you might also want to keep the base covered in winter if it freezes where you are.
Reply:crushed egg shells are a great source of calcium and nitrogen, both of which are good for roses.
Reply:miracle grow

I have rose cuttings from wild roses. how can i get them to root ?

i have tried this before and they just rot away. i have planted them and placed them in a plastic bag with no sucess, any suggestion.

I have rose cuttings from wild roses. how can i get them to root ?
split at bottom of stem about quarter inch into the stem dip in water for 5 min put splinter in between stem you cut dip in rooting powder and plant about 4 inches into compost
Reply:Well first of all the cuttings must be new growth. First go to your local garden center and get some root starter. Then take your new growth cuttings and cut the ends at a 45 degree angle, dip the ends into the starter and plant in a good potting soil and water regularly, but don't overwater. Hope this helps Mike

Roses Roses Roses and those pesky invisible bugs!?

Alright what in the world eats the leaves on your rose bushes? I've never seen anything, but yet on all 3 bushes the leaves are just holey and chewed. Besides 7 dust (my son likes to smell the roses) what is there that I can do that is non toxic to help keep them safe and repel whatever it is that is feasting on them? Thanks in advance to all who answer!

Roses Roses Roses and those pesky invisible bugs!?
You can buy lady bugs and they will eat the aphids on the your rose bushes.

I think they tell you to let them loose in the early morning hours.

You should be able to find them at a large hardware store, like Lowes.
Reply:I don't think sevin is non toxic....It's a carbaryl insectide and definitely not harmless. Maybe you meant it was harmful which is why you didn't use it? huh!

Okay then, how about some ideas like diatomaceous earth? That's made up of silica skeletons of diatoms (brown algae) and as the bug goes across it, it cuts them up. You have to put a solid circle around the plant and it doesn't work if it gets wet (bummer in wet areas!). That is a pretty good general pest cutter-upper...

Generally, when I have a pest problem I want to deal with, I try this webpage from the Univ of California, Davis. It is peer-reviewed and pretty dang good!

http://ipm.ucdavis.edu

Good luck to ya!
Reply:Tiny aphids are the bugs and there is a spray available at your garden center that will kill them.
Reply:neonates could be what is eating on your roses, but they don't eat on your roses where you can see them. They eat on the roses roots. Look around the steam of your roses at the ground, you may see little round shell looking things that look alot like little eggs, that is the shell of a neonates that have come out of the ground to shed so they can grow bigger. If you see this shells you need to mix your sevin dust with water and water your roses every day untill you don't see anymore shells. Always look at the potting soil in the pot of any plant you buy at Walmart or any other place you buy plants because neonates are shipped out of the south and they have a big problem with them down there. I have seen plants at stores for sale that were covered in them and the people at the counter didn't know what I was talking about or they said. anyway you could look for that..GOOD LUCK

How long can you keep roses refrigerated before they start to wilt or die?

also, will they still be avel to survive as long if they are left refrigerated for more the 2-3 hours

How long can you keep roses refrigerated before they start to wilt or die?
They can last over a week with proper care. Make sure to cut the stems on a daily basis in order to allow them fresh water, the stem cuts heal, closing the stem if you forget to cut. Without water they wilt.
Reply:If the flowers were very fresh, they

will generally be fine if refrigerated immediately, for even 2

or 3 days.

Do you cut down knockout roses for winter?

I live in Zone 4 and my double knockouts are still blooming away. Once we get a freeze, should I cut the bushes back for winter? Is there any sort of winterizing I should do? I planted them this spring and they have done great--don't want to lose them.

Do you cut down knockout roses for winter?
Lucky you with your knockout roses! Although Knockouts need less care then other roses, they do still need some. Do not cut them back for the winter. In fact, don't prune them heavy at all for the first two years. After that, prune by the 1/3 rule at an outward facing bud in the early spring. Clean up around the bushes in the fall, picking up any fallen debris. In Zone 4 you want to avoid the freeze/thaw/freeze cycle, so after the ground freezes, mulch around the bushes, piling mulch or loose dirt around them to a depth of about 1 foot. I usually just pull the wood mulch from my rose beds up around my roses. Hope this helps.
Reply:I live in Zone 8, but have always been told that roses should be pruned on Valentine's day. I do know you have to mulch heavily there because of your freezes %26amp; the ground heaving. I wouldn't cut back until you've had a freeze, but I would begin mulching.

How do you glaze real roses to make them last forever..?

Waxing doesn't make it last long enough..

whats in the glaze or where do i get it?

How do you glaze real roses to make them last forever..?
first you have to dry the roses by hanging them upside down in a dry dark place for about a week. i have always just sprayed them with a clear spraypaint gloss.
Reply:There is no product that will make them last forever. I'm assuming you want them to last in their "life" form. What you could do is to get a flower press, and press them. There will be a slight change in the color. Once pressed, laminate them on to book marks(making sure the laminate is archival). You could also preserve them for an extended time by placing the heads in silica gel to dry them out. You'll then have to make wire stems to reassemble them. This also has a limited "life span". They will eventually deteriorate and shatter.
Reply:this really was helpful for me. for extra shine i put hairspray over it once they are dried

as a finish you can also use acrylic glaze. i think even walmart has it.

Is it true that cut Roses thrive longer in lemonade/ 7 UP, rather than water?

If so, how long have you found on average?

Is it true that cut Roses thrive longer in lemonade/ 7 UP, rather than water?
I worked as a florist for 8 years-- When you get your roses home, cut them with a knife or box cutter diagonally across the bottom, cutting off about an inch and a half. Put them in plain warm water. Sugar and stuff really don't help all that much, and can discolor your petals. Add warm water to them every day. A good rose should last a week to ten days. Also, when picking out roses at the florist, don't look for tight buds. In many cases these won't open at all. They've been sitting in a warehouse too long and have developed an air pocket in the stem. The air pocket will travel up to the bud and it will flop over without opening. Most good florists will cut in their roses, put them in warm water and let them drink a little before putting them in the cooler. This will make the rose swirl open slightly, but not blow all the way open. It's a sign of a better quality product.

Colored roses have a tendency to have a shorter shelf life, but in many cases are more fragrant. There are very few commercial varieties of red roses that have a fragrance.
Reply:The extra sugar helps the roses feed even after cutting. Just like your Christmas tree stays green longer if you feed it sugar rather than just water. I usually get some flower fresh from the florist. Cut the bottoms off as soon as you get them home so the cut roses can feed. I've had great luck with my roses sometimes living for up to 4 weeks. This is about 2 weeks past roses set in water. Make sure the roses are really fresh to start with.
Reply:no. my mom tried it and it killed em.
Reply:i have found that any flowers tend to live longer in either fizzy drinks (such as Irn Bru, yeah im from scotland, 7 Up, lemonade etc) or by adding a spoonful or 2 of sugar to the water you have them in. So far I have found that Irn Bru does work best, dont know why.
Reply:I've heard of using sugar but the method I prefer is to add one capful of hydrogen peroxide to the water. It supposedly helps control the bacteria that will start when the stems start degrading. Every 2-3 of days, change the water, add the peroxide and trim the stems.

I have flowers in my window today that I originally put there December 20. Today is January 6. Only about 4 left from the original bouquet, but they are still pretty. I originally bought these marked down to half price. A really nice gift to yourself for many days and not much money. Really fresh flowers can last up to 4 weeks like this.
Reply:i've heard sugar water makes them last. so maybe.
Reply:i dont really see that it helps

Are there any natural ways to get rid of green fly on roses?

if possible, something that will also stop them coming back.

Are there any natural ways to get rid of green fly on roses?
There are a few things you can try:

1. Soapy water sprayed onto the roses (don't use washing up detergent, use facial soap!)

2. Boil up some tobacco (or cigar/cigarette ends) in water for about 10 minutes, allow to cool and spray this on. Nicotine is one of the most effective insecticides known. Alternatively, make a cold infusion of garlic, onions or chives by mashing some plant material up with water and spraying this on- aphids HATE it.

3. Try companion planting: plant between your rose bushes marigolds, basil, rosemary, sage, catnip or other very pungent aromatic herb. It will help keep aphids away from the whole area.
Reply:Great information. Am off to try it. Thankyou. Report It
Reply:Get a insect eating plant?
Reply:Although it's probably difficult to do so, you could introduce Ladybird larvae onto the plant. They are aphid (greenfly)'s natural predator. The problem of course is getting Ladybird larvae AND getting them to stay there.

You could always just spray them with pesticides?
Reply:A soap solution is supposed to do the trick, but you have to keep repeating it.

If you've got enough green fly, ladybirds will probably eat some of them
Reply:The best way to get rid of aphids on your roses, from my experience, is a three part procedure.

First, fill a spraybottle with soapwater, and thoroughly spray your roses once a day each day for one week. That should kill all of the aphids on your plants. It wouldn't hurt to continue spraying your roses once a week, thereafter, just in case.

Next, plant garlic cloves with your roses, garlic repels aphids.

Third, start growing nasturtium flowers about ten feet away from your roses. Nasturtiums are so attractive to aphids, they can draw them (when in their flying stage, at least) away from other plants.

Hopefully, that will minimize the aphids on your roses.
Reply:Ladybirds eat them, but apart from that i'm not sure.

I use water in a squirty bottle with a little bit of washing up liquid in it. i know it's not natural but it sure works.

Where can I find a florist that can spray paint a dozen roses blue?

I live in the 95014 zip code area, for reference.

Where can I find a florist that can spray paint a dozen roses blue?
there are 10 florists listed in the yellow pages for your zip code,

I did a search and they are there.

rather than ordering them 'spraypainted'

see if they can 'tip them' in blue

it would look much nicer.

also it is possible to dye them.

do you need them solid blue for some reason?

Most florists use Design Master floral paint for painting usually

they also use floral dye

the two things have completely different visual effect

spray painted flowers smell like spray paint

if that makes a difference
Reply:most florist will do it but if you take a dozen white roses and add blue food color to the water you get blue roses or maybe mix to roses(if you know what i mean by mix roses hybrid) you may get a blue like rose hope this helps
Reply:You can buy floral spray paint really cheap: http://www.floralsupply.com/sub_paint.ht...
Reply:Yes, you can spray paint roses blue, but they will look crappy. There are roses that naturally look blue. although kind of a silver blue. Can't think of the name of them. Call a really top shelf florist in your town and ask them. But no woman wants blue roses, believe me. Thats really tacky.
Reply:Any florist shop can do that for you, as most of them have floral spray on hand or if them don't, they can easily get it from the supplier.

What is the diffrences between roses and daisies?

Besides there color.

What is the diffrences between roses and daisies?
A rose is a flowering shrub of the genus Rosa, and the flower of this shrub. There are more than a hundred species of wild roses, all from the northern hemisphere and mostly from temperate regions. The species form a group of generally prickly shrubs or climbers, and sometimes trailing plants, reaching 2–5 m tall, rarely reaching as high as 20 m by climbing over other plants.

http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~mstephen/nuuk.j...

Daisies are a member of the Aster family and are hardy perennials. They get their name from the old Anglo-Saxon language "daes eage" which means "day's eye". This refers to the way the flowers open as the sun comes up and close when it goes down again - all part of their charm. There are thousands of different species of daisys in very different climates. They are very easy to grow and reach from 3 to 6 inches ( 8 - 15cm) tall and will grow in sun or shade.

http://www.dennisflood.com/photos/featur...
Reply:I like both. In my opinion roses (depending on color)are the "Honey I'm sorry, I screwed up" or "Honey I love you" ..Daisies are friendly, no real meaning behind them.. Daisies are simple.

How can I keep roses in a vase fresh longer?

I've hear putting aspirin in the vase with your flowers helps them stay fresh for longer... is this true? if not. how can I keep them fresh?

How can I keep roses in a vase fresh longer?
Aspirin doesn't work.

"Experimentation shows this method doesn't work well."

http://www.gomestic.com/Gardening/What-W...

Aspirin, in fact, had an adverse affect. The flowers appeared unhealthy, were wilted, brownish, and very dry.The aspirin solution may have been pulling the water from the cells of the plant. Since we observed the stems of the Aspirin group becoming brown, it is possible that the cells were drying out and dying.

http://www.msu.edu/course/lbs/145/luckie...

Keep your arrangement out of the sun.

It'll last longer if not overheated, away from bright lights, %26amp; out of drafts. A cooler area is better.Keep the water clean by changing it every couple of days so bacteria doesn't make it rot. Remove any lower leaves that would otherwise be immersed under water as they will rot and shorten the life of your flowers

Some people even add a drop of bleach to the water.

"Suggestions range from adding a few drops of bleach to each pint of vase water to keep bacteria from growing to using a solution made with lemon-lime soda, one part soda to two parts water. The sugar in the soda is said to feed the flowers and help buds continue to open, and acidity inhibits bacterial growth."

http://www.reneesgarden.com/articles/bou...

Michael Skaff, a floral specialist for ftd.com recommends: "Under running tap water, quickly cut the bottom of the stems on an angle and remove foliage that will be lower than the water level in the vase. Then add two to three drops of bleach to the vase to prevent bacteria buildup. "

http://www.quickandsimple.com/solutions/...

BTW, The ingredients in commercial flower food which keeps flowers fresh for at least a full week helps reduce the concentration of bacteria in the water, keep the water acidic, and supplies the flowers with sugar.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

I have miniature pink roses in a pot and they appear to be dying sooner than they should?

I am giving them water every couple of days and they are sitting in indirect light on my window sill. There are many buds still to come out and I'm afraid that I'm doing something to them (or not doing something) that is causing them to dry up and turn brown sooner than they should.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

I have miniature pink roses in a pot and they appear to be dying sooner than they should?
If they're drying up and turning brown/withering, it sounds like they're being burnt behind the glass. (Even though you think it's indirect sun, it can get very hot.)

It also sounds as though you're over watering - every two days is far too much.

Only when the soil below about 4" is dry, should you water.

When was the last time they were fed - roses need a lot of feeding - and dead heading.

Don't forget, they are outdoor and fairly hardy plants, so perhaps putting them into a garden will help.
Reply:All you have to do is water them with fertiliver but only every 2 days

How to arrange dozen roses in vase?

I know there are several ways. I'm looking for the preferred floral method without the use of tape. I'm going for an interview and must show my best work. I'm alittle rusty and would like to impress the owner.

How to arrange dozen roses in vase?
Ok I worked at a florist for three years. Flowers are always displayed professionally in an odd numbered pattern.

Cut the ends diagonally, then with a knife crush them a little.

(This allows them to absorb water better and if cut straight the ends will leak goodness instead of absorb anything.)

Use a knife to strim all nettles but try not to strim the actual stem. If in doubt carefully pull them sideways to snap them off one by one. Cut off any lower leaves that are going to sit in the vase.

Put them in boiling water for 30 seconds to open the petals.

If you have leafy green stems to use then do. Tradionally gypsophilia is used (the flower which has lots of little white heads on.)

I would start with one piece of greenery or gypsophillia ate the back of the vase. With only 12 roses you are best arranging them so they can be placed where people can view whem face on rather than all round.

Place one rose in the centre of the vase, the talles one.

Put two more in slightly shorter angled north-west and north-east out of the vase, one sligthly higer than the other.

Then add any more greenery you can if you have any before putting the rest of the roses in.

None of the roses shoule be at the same height.

They should all protrude from the vase at different angles.

Visualise your rose heads as dot and cross paper. If any roses heads are parallel horizontally or vertically, your arrangement will be unbalance.

Flowers look best arranged in odd numbers. So if you see a diagonal row of three, this is good, four is not!

Your stems should get shorter as you work outwards.

Remeber keep them all angled.

The beauty of designing in a vase is that it is not a permanent fixture, so you can always re-arrange.

Good luck, hope you get the job x

P.S Try your best and remember your best is all you can do so try not to worry too much.

P.P.S Confidence sells and art is as good as it is justified to be!
Reply:you can use marbles
Reply:work in "threes" by stem length then work with the 4 groups of three...good luck

Best way to preserve roses from the day my fiance and I got engaged.?

I am not sure if I should put them inside a book or what other methods of preservation there are. I think it would be pretty in a picture frame but I have no idea how to even go about doing that.

Best way to preserve roses from the day my fiance and I got engaged.?
You can hang them upside down in a closet.. Till they are dry.. Press them in a heavy book between wax paper... Or remove the petals, press between wax paper and put between 2 pieces of glass/nice picture of the two of you the day you got engaged ! Congrats....
Reply:You can let them dry and spray them with hairspray to preserve them and then put them in a shadow box to keep them from getting dusty. Congrats!

Where can I buy cheap flowers in Manhattan (like a bunch of roses for the house etc.)? I paid 15 dollars?

for 12 roses, 3 lilac stems, and 1 lily stem with 3 blooms on it in the uptown area. I was wondering if I could get something for cheaper since I love flowers.

I also heard rumours that Chelsea has this 5 am flower market, does anyone know if that's cheap, where and what time it is exactly?

What is the best way of getting rid of aphids in roses and quaking aspen trees?

go here and check this stuff out! i use it and i've not had one problem with mine this year! u can find the stuff at ur local walmart or lowes! great stuff

What is the best way of getting rid of aphids in roses and quaking aspen trees?
Mix water with dishdetergent....and spray away,it really works!Good luck!
Reply:After using the insecticidal soap, spray with a weak sugar water solution. This mimics the scent of the aphids, and will attract ladybugs which are nothing more than aphid eating machines. Wait a few days after the soap to apply the sugar water.
Reply:For roses you can prevent aphids from showing up by using Rose Care, a product with a systemic insectcide built in, if you just have a couple of plants, use insecticidal soap spray, this will aslo work on your Aspen if you have enough water pressure to reach all parts of the tree.
Reply:first hose them off with water then spary with water and dish soap.

How can I keep roses overnight?

I have bought my mother a bouquet of flowers for her birthday tomorrow. They were in a bucket of water in a cold case when I bought them, and I have placed them on their side in the fridge... should I have placed them in water in a vase instead? Or should I place them in a vase inside the fridge? Will the cold hurt them?

I just want these flowers to look beautiful for her tomorrow! Thanks for helping!

How can I keep roses overnight?
they need water and cool. In that order.

Cut their stems under standing water (like in a bucket of water) and cut on the diagonal. Smash the new cut end of the stem with a hammer and plunge immediately into water. (Ive heard hot water is best, as it travels up the stem faster - which makes sense, but I am always afraid to do it)

Keep them on the floor, on the lowest floor of your house. If you can, put the vase in a fridge, but no cooler than 35o.
Reply:put them in a vase of water with an asprin in it if you have it. Otherwise a vase in the fridge will help. They should look great and I bet your mom will love them.

In The Sims Superstar, how do I get Black roses from the obsessed fan?

I have Makin' Magic and there is a spell I can do to make myself famous but i can only do it if i have the black roses from the obsessed fan.

I already have the obsessed fan following me around. Do I need to do anything special to get him to leave me black roses or does he just randomly leave them for me?

he just randomnly leaves them, but you need to get quite famous first, i hav't been on it for a while but i remember you do need quite a few stars

What colors do roses come in? Can they be silver, purple, black..ect?

Some one told me roses can come in any color you can imagine. I haven't seen any brown roses, so I was wondering what colors can they be?

What colors do roses come in? Can they be silver, purple, black..ect?
Actually with a nice half open rose and some dye you can make the rose any colour you want. Dye the water in the vase and put the rose inside. The rose sucks up the dye and the petals colour changes accoridingly.

If you wanna get REALLY freaky with it, split the rose stem down the middle and place in two seperate dyes, like red and green. Pretty soon you'll have a rose fit for any hippy or Valentines day.
Reply:You can have them coloed at a special shop.
Reply:their are a large variety of color and the last time i checked they were talkin about making flowers produce all variety of colors but i aint sure but i can say for sure their are hundreds

How can I draw better roses?

I love roses, and I've been trying to draw some, but I just can't get it right. I'd love some techniques or links to sites that may help! :)

How can I draw better roses?
Here.

I love flowers.
Reply:Go and look at the anatomy of a rose (a real one if you can). It's more than a bunch of curves and a stick.

Look at where the petals actually grow from and how they curve and form. Look at what the stem really looks like, note how it gets thicker towards the flower.

When you add the tiny, correct details, it is noticed and it makes your roses look better.
Reply:Roses are hard. I should know, I've been painting them off and on for years. There's no way to make them easy to draw. But you'll get better with practice and observation.

Tips:

Keep in mind that the petals actually overlap in a spiral around the center of the flower. Each variety of rose has dozens to hundreds of petals per flower, so you might not have noticed this before.

Draw white or pale roses at first. You will be able to see the subtle value changes and the shadows cast by the petals MUCH more easily than on a red rose.

Put a good direct light source on your rose, so that there are a lot of shadows. Sometimes it's easier to draw the shadows cast by the form than the form itself.

There are probably many technique books available. Maybe go to Amazon and do a book search on "drawing flowers"?
Reply:I draw them all the time off memory %26amp; leave them as "tips" to the women when going to coffee or the bars. (the best thing to do is find pictures or art books that show how to draw them-go in the libraries or book stores. (start in the middle, %26amp; work your way around-as of an open rose.
Reply:,practice , practice ,practice

My valentine roses lasted 4 days, a tied arrangement, is this normal.?

Hi, my husband ordered a dozen red roses to be delivered on valentines day. The first one to die or go over was the next day and now 4 days on almost half have gone over. As you can tell, I don't get delivered flowers very often, but is 4 days rather short for professionally arranged roses.

My valentine roses lasted 4 days, a tied arrangement, is this normal.?
Yes! it is,but if you can get them out of the water if you still have them.

Tie upside down in a very warm room in the house...maybe close to a dryer, or hot water heater or even a warm room.

Leave for 2 weeks....and 'maybe' just ,maybe you can still keep some of them...as a reminder how hubby was thinking of you.

Now when you have them dryed...pick out say 4-5 of the best or even more! and take a nice frame.Remove the glass, and just stick them on carboard in side the frame....don't replace the glass....and for a yr....they should look sweet!

Cut off stems...to fit the frame .Your roses will then remain in your heart a little longer! :)
Reply:that is about average if you did not recut the stems and change the water every day. that is something they sometimes forget to tell because the florist is so busy that time of year.
Reply:That was so sweet of your hubby. It is sad when that happens to roses, and, unfortunately, it's the worst on Valentine's Day. That's because they are shipped early to the shops so the shops have time to do the orders, etc. One thing to do to help them last a bit longer is to recut the end stems of the roses--take a utility scissors and at an angle, make a new cut. Also, replace the water in the vase every other days. I keep all of my roses by drying them. I cut off the blossoms and put them in a flat glass bowl and air dry them. You can use them as potpourri (add some essence) or just display them in a crystal bowl .
Reply:Yes and no. I have seen it happen both ways. It is according to the shop and how they handle their merchandise. But cut flowers do not live long.

Congratulations on receiving roses.
Reply:it depends on many factors,

if they were well watered

used aquaplus flowerfood, i

f they were premium fresh roses

how long the company hand them before

if your roses were wired,

if they were kept out of heat and direct sunlight.

roses aren't typically know to be a long lasting flower. premium long stem roses from equidor can last up to two weeks.

I really hope you enjoyed your flowers it truly is one of the best gift to recive ever!
Reply:Cut flowers espesially roses do not last long. 5 or 6 days would be the maximum for roses. But they should at least all last a few days.

What are the little greenish white bugs on my roses?

they look so gross! how do i get rid of them and what are they?

What are the little greenish white bugs on my roses?
they are aphids and you can get spray at walmart for them specifically or soap and water will do the job to if mixed and sprayed, totally harmless
Reply:They a aphids. They stick on your rose and suck the sap. They are asexual so they can reproduce without mating. They can multiply on an exponential curve. 1 spawns 2 and then 2 spawns 4 and then 4 spawns 8 and so forth. Think of the infestation. Ladybugs love to munch on them, so go get some ladybugs.
Reply:Most likely aphids. Is there a sticky residue too ? They have sprays you can buy to get rid of them. They eat new leaves and flower buds. And yes they are gross !
Reply:they're called aphids. Lady bugs eat them, or you can buy insecticide.
Reply:Probably aphids. Go to your local greenhouse or garden centre for a product.
Reply:Depends where you live,..I would say that they are aphids. You can keep them at bay by planting garlic around the base of the plant. Also there are some excellent organic sprays that you can use. Also, crushed garlic in warm soapy water works wonders for removing them. Good luck! :)
Reply:They may be aphids.Introduce some lady bugs, they will eat them all, cause ladies love them
Reply:Aphids. Go to Home Depot and nuke em quick cuz they reproduce like nobody's business.
Reply:Could be aphids:

I think you can get rid of them by getting ladybirds (which will eat them) or else spraying for bugs. I think there are also certain home remedies you can spray onto the plants which will repel them.
Reply:use a mixture of simple green and water and spray onto the rose bushes, then rinse it off. They are aphids.

What is a simple solution for black spot on roses?

My climbing rose bush recently developed some black spot. I would prefer to use an organic method but am open to suggestions. Thanks!

What is a simple solution for black spot on roses?
Two thoughts: one is horticultural oil spray used to smother insects also puts an oil barrier on the leaves resisting black spot spore germination. The oil must be on before the spores.

Here is a website to show you other possibilities. Remember the best "cure" is prevention.

Bicarbonate of Soda Sprays

World-wide gardeners are turning to Organic Gardening to improve their own health and to eliminate harmful pesticides and chemicals from their immediate environment.

There are a multitude of organic gardening remedies that can easily be made at home to control common garden fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew and black spot.

Home-made Fungal Disease Preparations for Black Spot and Powdery Mildew

Using Bicarbonate of Soda ( Baking Soda, Sodium bicarbonate ), a spray can be made that will effectively control powdery mildew and black spot.

Powdery Mildew : To one bucket of water add 7 teaspoons (20 grams) of bicarbonate of soda and sufficient laundry soap to make a rich lather. Stir the mixture to dissolve the bicarbonate of soda powder. Spray both sides of the affected leaves.

Black Spot : To 10 litres (USA=21pints, UK=17? pints) of water add 1 tablespoon (USA/UK=3 teaspoons) of bicarbonate of soda, 1 tablespoon of soap detergent and 2 tablespoons of white oil. Stir the liquid to completely dissolve the bicarbonate powder.

Before applying the mixture first water the rose's foliage to remove any dust and allow the leaves to dry. NEVER spray in full sunshine or in the heat of the day as the leaves may burn, instead wait until early evening.

White Oil : Proprietary brands of White Oil are available but it is very simple to make; blend together 1 cup (USA/UK=1?cups) of cooking oil, 1? cups (USA/UK=2cups) of water, and 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Dilute this mixture at a rate of 3 teaspoons per ? litre (USA=1pint, UK=16 fl.ozs) of water for spraying.

White Oil Precaution

It is possible for White Oil to stunt the growth of ferns and orchids. To prevent this occurring, dilute the spray to 3/4 strength and do not spray when the temperature is above 25°C (77°F).
Reply:there is nothing like chemicals - go and buy the spray can for rose rusts!

What type of roses can I grow in washington state??

Also...when can i start growing them...it is cold over here compared to texas...also can i grow them in a really large pot on the porch of my apartment?like a 2 ft wide and across and 3 ft deep?

What type of roses can I grow in washington state??
Most Roses will grow in zones as low as 4 %26amp; 5.

Here is a web site that lists which roses do best in which zones. While you are browsing through the roses just click on one that interests you and in the rose description you will find what zone is appropriate for that rose. To get you off to a good start, I would begin with the Hardy roses and search out from there. I love this site. They are reasonably priced and deal/breed exceptional own root roses. You might want to check out the David Austin roses as well.

As for growing in a pot, roses need at least a 25 liter pot which is about the size of a half barrel.

You may be able to do this online too.In Maine,we have several zones so it depends where you live in Washington state . Get a good book on roses as there are so many types and many sizes. Some are fine for potting up in a container. There are mini roses big and small. Good luck to you!!

What do blue roses stand for?

each rose has it own meaning, what does the blue rose represent?

What do blue roses stand for?
"Blue: Fantasy and impossibility. Hoping for a miracle and new possibilities. Many people have a quest or a fascination for blue roses. I have a book by Ibn al Awam, which was written in the twelfth century, translated into French by J. J. Clement entitled Le livre de l'agriculture. the book speaks of azure blue roses that were known to the orient. These blue roses were attained by placing a blue die into the bark of the roots. This process is explained in the book and has been proven to work by Joret, a very knowledgeable french scientist."

This is really an interesting page and has info on a lot of different colors. It's kind of fun reading for me.

http://www.rosegathering.com/meaning.htm...
Reply:Whatever you want it to represent. Some guy makes up what everything stands for and you believe it. Why? What does blue mean to you?
Reply:To my knowledge this is no such thing as a true blue rose...

"It was also something that was apparently impossible to do by using conventional breeding techniques. Another incentive was the fact that there are very few true blue cut flowers and breeders were very interested in developing a long-term cut flower that was blue."

Interesting question. To answer your question directly, a blue rose may represent "something which is unattainable."

For larger blooms at the expense of more flowers, prune in spring to two or three healthy canes.

Epsom salts applied around the soil in Spring helps also.
Reply:Plant the roses exactly how the other answerers are telling you.

Here is the best advice I got two months ago when we started to cut back our overgrown yard and plants at the house we bought this winter:

You can't really kill a rose unless you rip it out of the ground and grind it up in a chipper, they are really forgiving plants.

The best way to make them bloom well and be really full is to cut the hell out of them. Just buy some trimmers and cop them down to about 6" to 9" above the ground, then they will grow like mad. After the blooming season is over, you can them trim them back down again or just trim them back to the point you see fit, depending on how big you want the bush to be.

I cut some HUGE overgrown rose bushes on my property that hadn't been cut in probably three years completley off about a month ago and they've got leaves all over them. Some of them have new branches that are three or four inches long. I expect that buds will begin to appear any time.

This last weekend I trimmed four more rose bushes completely down to about 6" and they are already budding up.
Reply:Ensure your roses are in an area of full sunlight in damp soil that does not dry out freuquently. Sunlight is a very important factor which influences the flowering of roses, so does the nutrient richness of the soil. If you do not have clay soil, get some and break it down using sand and leaf mould. Sieve it through taking large leaves and stones out and mix it into the roots of your roses. The reason why you should use clay based soil is because clay traps nutrients preventing them being washed away, it also traps moisture and roses like it a lot. Applying a new layer of leaf mould around your roses each year will help give them enough nutrients for growth and you may wish to purchase tomorite tomato feed as it is very high in potash which is supposed to encourage the development of healthy flowers on plants.

hope this helped, good luck with your roses
Reply:They need well-buried roots and a lot of organic matter, like rotted manure. Then they need to be watered if it gets dry. And lastly, they need to be pruned in the winter, right back to just a few sticks. It doesn't matter if you're bad at pruning, since they'll even forgive being hacked at with a chainsaw.

Given this rough love and good feeding, they'll respond by putting out a *lot* of new growth in the next growing season and then flowering profusely. If you cut the flowers regularly, they'll produce even more.

Roses are prone to greenfly, which can be sprayed off with soapy water or rubbed off by hand, or you can use chemicals. If you leave pests or mould on the leaves unchecked, you won't get good flowers, so you have to be vigilant.
Reply:Good plants need good soil. So soil prep before planting is critical. Roses need good drainage, but a soil that does not dry out quickly. Clay soils need to be lightened with organic matter, sandy soils also improve with OM. At planting it's a good idea to incorporate phosphorus fertilizer at the bottom of the planting hole and mix into the soil. Root development needs phosphorus. The planting hole should be wide and slightly deeper than the root ball. Make a cone out of the soil removed and spread the roots over the cone so the bud union where the root and stem come together is at ground level (or in cold climates about an inch below soil level). Back fill with soil, stop water well, then continue back filling. It's a good idea to shade the new rose if hot weather is at hand as the root system won't be working 100% and the rose will wilt.

The rose type is critical. Not every rose will produce big beautiful roses. There are a variety of roses now and within each group there are great ones all the way to piss-poor. The All American Rose Selection people rate the roses. If you can get a copy of their booklet, you will know which are far better than others.

Also not all roses are suited for all climates. Where I am, the solar intensity is huge. Our roses must have thicker leaves with more cutin than some least we end up with crispy critter roses.

There there are the insects and diseases. Various climates have various problems. I don't encourage continual use of systemic fertilizer with insecticide as it tends to build up within the plant, weakening it. I prefer dealing with each problem in the least toxic method possible. That may mean knowing when mildew may occur and getting a cover spray onto the leaves.....even horticultural oil will help.

Also some insects hit certain color roses. Here thrips love the lighter colors. I know if I want those roses I'll have to deal with thrips prevention.

Yes, roses are water hogs, but they aren't swamp plants. With that much water they also will loose nitrogen in the soil especially in warmer weather. So fertilizing is critical as is attention to micronutrients.

Proper pruning and blossom removal is critical.

Finally the soil must be continually enriched. Each year the soil around the plants gets compost.

Hope this helps. See if there's a rose society near you. These rosarians are there to help us get the best possible roses in our gardens.
Reply:if you want beutiful roses, try this: BANANA PEELS, they are loaded with potasium and roses need potasium to grow and produce big and strong flowers. Just put the peels at the base of the plant and cover with dirt.
Reply:Do your research before planting. Some roses flower alot more than others. Also, be sure to plant them out in full sun. I noticed that the hybrids don't flower nearly as much as the old fashioned.

How can I stop the black spots on my roses?

I live in a humid climate and I'm having trouble getting blooms and good foliage.

How can I stop the black spots on my roses?
Karma,

Many good suggestions thus far. Ortho and Bayer make good sprays for the mold. The fert is a great idea. I'm going in a different direction ( in a way ).

You need to remove the leaves/stems with the Black Spotting ASAP. Use a hand pruner to do this. Before you prune mix 1 cup of Clorox bleach to one gallon of water in a bucket and put on a pair of latex or rubber gloves. After each cut (yes it is a pain in the....) dip the pruner and the gloves in the solution. This will prevent spreading the disease.

Remove any/all mulch from the base of the plant to an area outside the dripline of the plant. The spores can/do live in this environ. With the pruner cut all lower branches and sprouts to six-eight inches above ground (allows for air). Replace the mulch with a shredded Cypress Mulch. This is not cheap, however, it looks great and suppresses the molds.

The fert is the great idea. You want an acidic fert that has a ratio of 1-2-1. This would translate into a 5-10-5, 10-20-10 etc. You want this to be Granular and spread from about two or three inches from the base to a foot outside the dripline of the plant. This will promote the root growth. You will apply before remulching and water it in deeply. Fert the shrubs every six-eight weeks. Since they are in stress there is nothing wrong with using the liquid Mir-Gro Acid immediately on the pruning and remulching.

There is a simple spray you can use to greatly reduce the problem. Put 1 cup per gallon of Pure Ivory Liquid Detergent in a sprayer (adapt to the amount you really need.). Spray the underside and upperside of the leaves and the stems as well. Do this when the temps are not expected to be above 75-78 and apply in the morning when it can dry. Organic without the cost! Hope it helps.
Reply:Look for a spray that says on it -kills black spots. There are different brands- I know Ortho makes one. I've been having the same problem with my rose bushes!
