Roses Roses Roses and those pesky invisible bugs!?

Alright what in the world eats the leaves on your rose bushes? I've never seen anything, but yet on all 3 bushes the leaves are just holey and chewed. Besides 7 dust (my son likes to smell the roses) what is there that I can do that is non toxic to help keep them safe and repel whatever it is that is feasting on them? Thanks in advance to all who answer!

You can buy lady bugs and they will eat the aphids on the your rose bushes.

I think they tell you to let them loose in the early morning hours.

You should be able to find them at a large hardware store, like Lowes.
Reply:I don't think sevin is non toxic....It's a carbaryl insectide and definitely not harmless. Maybe you meant it was harmful which is why you didn't use it? huh!

Okay then, how about some ideas like diatomaceous earth? That's made up of silica skeletons of diatoms (brown algae) and as the bug goes across it, it cuts them up. You have to put a solid circle around the plant and it doesn't work if it gets wet (bummer in wet areas!). That is a pretty good general pest cutter-upper...

Generally, when I have a pest problem I want to deal with, I try this webpage from the Univ of California, Davis. It is peer-reviewed and pretty dang good!

Good luck to ya!
Reply:Tiny aphids are the bugs and there is a spray available at your garden center that will kill them.
Reply:neonates could be what is eating on your roses, but they don't eat on your roses where you can see them. They eat on the roses roots. Look around the steam of your roses at the ground, you may see little round shell looking things that look alot like little eggs, that is the shell of a neonates that have come out of the ground to shed so they can grow bigger. If you see this shells you need to mix your sevin dust with water and water your roses every day untill you don't see anymore shells. Always look at the potting soil in the pot of any plant you buy at Walmart or any other place you buy plants because neonates are shipped out of the south and they have a big problem with them down there. I have seen plants at stores for sale that were covered in them and the people at the counter didn't know what I was talking about or they said. anyway you could look for that..GOOD LUCK
