When can I cut my roses?

I normally cut them in the autumn but wasn't well and then the weather changed. Can I cut them at any other time of year? They're looking really straggly and yuck at the moment and I want to know if I'd be alright to cut them back now and if I do, will I need to prune them more or less hard than I would in the autumn?

When can I cut my roses?
You can prune roses at any stage providing you do not prune when there is frost-this leads to die back and will mean you need to prune again.

The reason for not pruning 'late' is because in doing so you shorten your flowering period on the plant-it will come out in bloom later than normal..

Cut them back now, leaving two or three outward facing buds below where you prune,in case of die back.

Whether you prune hard or not depends on the vigor of the variety you have, but generally you will do no harm pruning hard if they are straggly as you describe and you get down to at least pencil thick wood.Anything thinner/crossing branches/shoots growing into/inside the bush take out so that air can circulate when the bush is in leaf.
Reply:I have always heard that it's best to prune in the spring. I pruned mine last weekend. I prune them every year, but do a hard pruning every other year. My neighbor always prunes in the Autumn, and they always have beautiful roses.
Reply:after the last frosts have gone
Reply:Pruning encourages growth, I would wait till a week or two before they normally start putting out new growth, too early will cause them to start growing too early, but waiting too late will stunt the plant. I would cut them bact the same amount as always. Here in GA I would prune them at the end of this month.
Reply:The time of year for pruning roses depends on your climate, but based on my experience with roses in California, it should be OK to prune them any time before they have a lot of new growth. I don't see why you'd prune them more or less now than you usually would.
Reply:I live in Texas and the ideal time to trim roses here is on Valentines day or near then. I would not prune in the fall, unless it was early fall. I'm assuming you're talking hybred tea roses. I'm about a week late now for the same reason you gave. I've not been well. Hopefully I can get out tomorrow and get it done. But no more hybred tea for me, I'm going earth kind from now on with new roses.
