I grew them in my flower bed 2 years ago and they came up again this past spring. I can't remember if I pulled them last fall or if I just left them and pulled them out in the spring. I was trying to look on the web to find out what I should do but I keep coming up with sites to little thorny rose bushes. The flowers I have are creeping vines, not a bush. Can anyone help me out? The name I've heard is something like porticula.
Does anyone know the proper name for moss roses?
Portulaca
They are annuals, if they weren't pulled, they would have died in the frosts. They do however self-sow their seed very easily. So in the spring they seemingly come back like perennials. I planted just a few last year, a lo- I got a few this year. If you planted a lot, you probably got a lot this year! I had a neighbor that NEVER planted any herself for the 10 odd years that I knew her. If you don't want them, you'll have to weed them out, before they bloom and can drop new seed. You could apply 'Preen' in the early spring to keep the seed from germinating. Keep on the watch though, if any make it, get'em as quickly as you can so that more seed isn't dropped.
Good luck-

Reply:Portulaca grandiflora.....is known as "Moss Rose" in our area. It thrives in heat and humidity to bloom from late spring till fall. As the days become longer, Portulaca flowers open only during the mornings and for a short time in the afternoon. They usually come in mixed colors, but favorite selections may be quickly rooted from stem cuttings.
