How and what time of the year do roses need to be trimmed?
You can really cut them anytime as they will "come back" but fall before the frost is the best time if not then, then in the spring before they start to bud. This isn't horticulture talk, it's just what I do (and it works) Cut it (the stems) down to about 12 - 18 inches. When a stem "branches" (like a Y) dont cut under the Y cut both sides of the Y then your rose wll bush out and become larger and more showy. Also, when your rosebuds bloom they eventually fall off %26amp; die. Trim the stem down to the "5th leaf"( that has 5 leaf "petals) on it - I don't know the proper name for it) It is the leaf w/ 5 leaves on it. The top leaves have 3 the middle 5 and the bottom 7 (usually). Anyway, there you go. Good Gardening to you.
Reply:If the plant has not started to bloom ( late winter early spring) i trim my roses back to about 12 to 15 inches in height. Once they start to bloom, after the bloom is done you can trim that stem back a set of leaves that total 5 small leaves. The plant will them start another stem that will have a bloom on it. In the fall ( late fall, early winter) i trim my bushes back to about 18 to 24 inches and put mulch around the base of the plants.

You can google growing and raising Roses and get lots of info from the Internet.
