How do you prune roses?

I'm new to gardening... can anyone tell me in simple terms how to prune a rose?

How do you prune roses?
When cutting roses, you have to cut them at an angle, never straight across. Also it is best to cut just below the first set of five leaves....If you cut above that the flower will not come back. Good luck!! Hope this helped. I had a rose bush grow to be 6' tall that way, and full of roses!!!
Reply:My Late Dad was a keen grower of roses and he always gave a small prune at th eback end of the year just tidy them.

And in Springtime pruned right back just untill the first sign of new growth .

He had perfect roses all year, good luck but you have splendid answers here that will help you along.
Reply:My garden is full of roses, but I dont pune any of them...I only prune rose bushes.
Reply:Some good answers here, and I also do hard cuttings, soft cuttings etc...Beyond the answers here I would like to add something...Wherever you cut the roses, on the stem left apply a drop of regular elmers glue to seal off the open area and decrease the chance of getting a fungis in them...It also prevents "borers"(insects that eat from inside the stalk) from entering the cut areas..read under "rose stem borers" on the link below

Reply:end of September I prune mine cut all down short at an angle don't be afraid they will bloom again next year and each year you will have more flowers, you cant go wrong roses are hardy, and each year you will enjoy them
Reply:I'm assuming that you have a hybrid tea or ordinary shrub rose as climbers require slightly different treatment.

When pruning any shrub remember to first remove the three D's.

Dead, diseased and damaged.

The plant needs to have an open centre with no crossing branches, aim to create a goblet shape.

Remove stems that are crossed or touching each other as they will rub together in the wind and damage each other - you don't have to take out both just one will do.

Cut stems just above a leaf node with an outward facing bud, if you cut too far above the node the stem will start to die back a little and this gives the opportunity for disease to get in.

Don't fret too much it would be difficult to kill the rose unless you cut it all to the ground.

Enjoy your gardening.

Reply:Prune the 'spent' rose buds off by following down the stem. When you see five leaves cut above those five leaves. Do a slant cut to the stem cutting off the dead rose buds.

In late Fall, I cut the branches down to ground level. They come back in late Spring healthier than ever.

I also spread my banana peels (cut up) around the base of the plant. It has really made a difference in how much they grow.
Reply:In late Autumn, cut off all the smaller shots back to the main stem and leave the bush well balanced. It will shoot again the following spring.
Reply:cut them!!!!
Reply:Just cut off some of the stems and rose heads it makes it grow more!!!Have fun with your garden
Reply:Never make a straight cut, always cut on an angle and below the bud.
Reply:i prune them back to the green wood in spring but I have david austin english roses a type of shrub rose NE Missouri
Reply:Cut back to the lowest outward facing bud. Make your cut at an angle. Get rid of suckers below ground level (they usually have seven leaves as oppose to five.)
