How many cultivars (species) of roses are there?
That is beyond knowing. There is a number of cultivars that have been patented is a known number, but roses have been
cultivated and new cultivars bred all over the world, and many are unknown now. The plants have been living here or there until everyone has forgotten what it's called.
A cultivar is not the same as a species. A cultivar is a chosen variety raised by a breeder. Here is a link to one of my favorite rose sites. It may have the information you are looking for:
