I live in zone-5 When is the best time to place burlap on shrubs and roses in the fall ?

How is the best way to cover the plants. Can you use old sheets or anything else?

Good question:

Please oh please don't cover the plants. Put in wooden stakes around the plant, and staple the burlap or material to the stakes. Keep the material a few inches off the ground so that it doesn't wick moisture up, and with that weight pull the screen down. Also make sure that the screen is taller than the plant (by a foot or two) and that the screen doesn't touch the plant.

As for when, I usually recommend the window of between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Honestly as long as you have the stakes in the ground before it freezes, you can put up the screen as late as Christmas.

I hope that this helps

Good luck-
Reply:I've seen people use all kinds of things - sheets could certainly be used. Cover your plants before the first freeze.

May I add that I have used burlap also, but last year, found that the weed blocking material used to block weeds, works excellently, also.

This stuff is easy to use, holds up well, plus really blocks the "scorch" from high, extremely cold winter winds, while still allowing the air to enter and circulate thus preventing rot or disease from moisture build-up.

Hope this helps, Dave
