I need to keep the deer away from my roses!!?

I am getting ready to go down to my grandpa's house to dig up my grandmothers roses. I know that as soon as I get them into the ground here at my place the deer are gonna kill them. What can I do to keep them away from my roses??

Last summer I used some sort of spray that the previous owners of the house had left us. It was a dry powder that they purchased and mix them selves. Honestly, it smells like deer pee. I don't know where they got it, so I have now resorted to the pepper and garlic spray listed by someone else. The sprays seem to be working when I remember to put them out.



I've also heard that if you hang out bars of Irish Spring soap it keeps them away. I've done that, but I have no proof that it's working since I also moved the bird bath they were drinking out of too.



I think the best way to keep the deer away is 1) not to plant them in a path of the deer. I planted a new bush where I know they walk and sure enough they munched it, but my other ones they left alone.



And 2) put a round of chicken wire arround them if they are getting munched on. It's not terribley attractive, but it works until the bush matures and gets BIG thorns they won't like. We had to do that last fall because the deer were eating off the ends of the canes where there was new green growth.



At least those are what seem to be working for me.

Reply:Try spraying the rose bushes with garlic/pepper tea.



To make garlic/pepper tea, liquify 2 bulbs of garlic and 2 hot peppers in a blender 1/2 to 2/3 full of water. Strain the solids and add enough water to the garlic/pepper juice to make 1 gallon of concentrate. Use 1/4 cup of concentrate per gallon of spray. Add two tablespoons of molasses for more control.



This stuff works equally well for rabbits and other small mammals.

Reply:I have 2 suggestions...I heard if you put a few wads of dog hair aroung the perimeter of youryard they will stay away. (They think its fox, coyotes, or wolf and stay away) (Save the hair from the dog brush when you or if you don't have a dog brush out their dog) And you can buy in a good nursery or garden center concentrated urine of the above animals and sprinkle or spray that around the bushes.
Reply:Have the deer created a regular game trail near your home? If so, put a salt lick on the other side of the game trail from your garden. The deer will be attracted to the salt (a mineral they need) and will be lured away from your roses.
Reply:Here in the NC Mtns. some of us use human hair. Get someone to save you some cut hair (Like at your local stylist). Put it around your plants and you can even place it in a mesh bag and hang it on your roses. This seems to work pretty well. Some folks up here also hang slices of strong smelling soap like Zest or Coast or Irish Spring on and around their roses and gardens. I hope this helps. :-)
Reply:Or, stay up all night with a shotgun. One blast and they will not come back-for awhile.
Reply:Try mothballs, just put some around the roses and they should stay away.
