when can I plant some rose bushes this fall? What month can I do this in? also any suggestions on some types of rose bushes, nothing that climbs, just a type of a bush, and will it bloom this next spring in 2007?
I want to plant some roses?
Potted roses can still be planted right now. And now is a great time of year to find roses on sale or clearance at local nurseries and garden centers. If they are in pots you can plant them without worry. Bare root roses are generally planted in the spring. If you get a shrub now, it may bloom this year and definitely will bloom next year. I would recommend a Floribunda type of rose. They are prolific bloomers that get many full size roses in clusters all over the shrub. Floribundas also bloom all season long and are usually more disease resistant. I would stay away from Old Fashioned Roses because they usually only bloom once early in the season and then they are done for the rest of the year. If you cant find what you want locally, you may have to wait until spring but most shrubs planted in the spring will bloom that year. Jackson and Perkins has a lot on their web-site if you just want to get some Ideas. A lot of local nurseries carry Jackson and Perkins roses at their store but some varieties you can only get from them directly. They will also send you a free catalog that is good to take with you when you shop to compare. Best Of Luck!!!
Reply:Before I can make suggestions I need more information. What zone do you live in? Color preferences? Large shrubs or compact ones? There are so many varieties of roses, habits, bloom times, hardiness levels, you really need to specify what you are looking for and where you live.
Reply:You can buy Knock Out Roses and plant them anytime you want ,also they will bloom from spring until late fall.
Reply:Fall is a perfect time to plant...you may have to wait until spring as this is when many rose growers ship (plenty of time in winter to plot and dream and scheme). there are some good informational resources online (link below to gardenmob).
i do recommend you buy online from a reputable source (such as antique rose emporium) that will ensure quality plants. many of the roses from those guys are old roses and more disease resistant than the hybrid teas and such you'll find at jackson %26amp; perkins. not a knock against jackson and perkins, it's just that i personally have little patience with needy plants in the garden.
until you've seen an old rose in the garden...wow.
good luck! barrie.
Reply:Now is a good time to plant roses if you can find them in the stores. Most sell them when they are in bloom. On the package it tells if it is a climbing rose or not. The JFK is a beautiful bush and continuous bloomer. Good luck and be sure to plant it where it will get plenty of sun.
Reply:I live in north west Missouri and always plant my roses in May and June. You want to make sure that you plant them in plenty of time to let them get a good root foundation before the first heavy frost.
