I use Miracle Grow for Roses (pink box) available even at Walmart for a couple bucks. The box lasts an extremely long time. They need the fertilizer nutrients or they will not bud properly for you. I have indoor %26amp; outdoor roses which are breathtaking %26amp; had no previous experience in them.
Wikipedia has good info especially if you want to find out about diseases %26amp; pests so you can stop anything you notice is hurting them. Ever seen Dummies books? The have a 7 in one about gardening. It also has great info. Good luck %26amp; enjoy!!! BTW %26gt; I have them in border boxes, individual pots, hanging baskets %26amp; outdoor bushes. All different kinds. The miracle grow works great!
How can I make my roses grow strong and healthy?
Roses love banana peels. You can grind them up in your blender, or just dig a bit around the rose and lay the peels flat. They also like coffee grounds and egg shells. Just make sure to bury the shells, grounds and banana peels. Also, they need to be where they will get lots of sun.
Reply:Follow all of the above suggestions, although the banana peel and egg shell technique may be more than you are wiling to do.
Roses really like water but they don't like their "feet" wet. Thus, a well-drained soil is necessary. Well-drained means that if you dig a two foot deep hole and fill it up with water, it will have drained out within 30 minutes.
Roses also like to be fed. Although Miracle-Gro is good stuff, I get better results with different kinds of fertilizer. I like to give my roses timed-release stuff (which is more expensive) and supplement it with MiracleGro every two months. They REALLY respond.
Good luck. It's fun to play with roses because they are so responsive when you give them attention.
