How much should you trim back Roses at the beginning of Spring?

1.Floribundas.Prune by the see-saw method i.e. Old wood to the lowest outward pointing bud,new growth "tip",cut away the unripe wood shortening by about a third again to an outside pointing bud.

2.Hybrid teas.Cut back by about a third, removing all growths thinner than a pencil, any stumps or diseased wood and any crossing branches.

3.Climbers.Generally speaking shouldn't be pruned as may revert to the bush form.Train the shoots horizontally,to encourage side growth which will carry flowers.

4.Standard Roses.Treat as the bush form, aim to create a goblet shape, open at the centre.

5.Patio roses.Normally grown in pots and should be lightly pruned, removing any dead or diseased wood.

Most other types should be pruned according to the vigour of growth. As a rule of thumb, prune weak growths hard and strong shoots lightly.

Remove any suckers from below ground level-these are generally more thorny, lighter in colour and have seven leaves.Fork the soil lightly, apply "RosePlus" or similar as instructed and roses should grow away.

the same as you should trim your bush............................
Reply:From what I have heard the canes should initially be cut back only 1/3. Also remove any dead canes, canes crossing or rubbing each other. Opeining the center as much as possible will allow more light and air to enter.
Reply:Oh boy, just like everything, there's more than one way to do it. I think everyone is right--you should look for the bud unions before you cut. If you want the new growth to grow outward, find a bud union on the outside of the cane you are pruning and cut at a 45 degree angle just about the bud. Your rose bush should look like an urn with an open center when you are finished. You should cut out all the dead or damaged or weak canes and those that cross and rub on each other in addition to lowering the length of the canes. I say prune your roses to 1/2 their height. Shorter or longer is okay, too.
Reply:About 6 inches from the ground.Cut just above an outward-facing bud.
Reply:I trim mine back as far as possible, they still grow well.
Reply:Hybred tees up to 50%.floribundas up to 30%.Climbers repeat flowering cut down to two bubs from horizontal shoots.Ramblers after flowering whole shoots to ground if old.All roses flower better on new wood
Reply:To the first bud normally.
