It's February, and maybe I'm feeling a little late?? These kids grow about 4 feet during the summer alone. It's mid thirties here. Any help?
Am I a little late trimming my roses?
I live in Zone 7, and have already trimmed my roses.
Good rule of thumb - if you start seeing tiny budding, than it is a good time to prune.
Do not prune your roses all the way to the ground - most roses are grown and grafted onto stronger root stock, and if you cut to close to the ground you can remove the top or grafted part of your rose.
Reply:Depends on the rose. Most climbing roses only bloom on old growth. That is , if you prune now, you probably wont get any blooms until next year. Most grandiflora bloom on the same seasons growth. My rule of thumb for the winter is to just leave the plant alone. Hard prune in fall, or wait till spring to shape up the plant a bit.
Reply:Wait until it warms up a bit (March or April?) and trim them. I'll be honest, I have trimmed mine early (October) and late (May) and they still grow for me. And I don't have a green thumb with flowers, either.
Reply:It depends on where you live. I am in Pacific NW, and I am supposed to prune mine after the Presidents day, or when yellow Fothysia blooms. I don't think you are late, but you should check with your local knowledgeable nursery or master gardener.
